To begin with, the Scavengers played covers; songs by the Damned, the Sex Pistols, Eddie and the Hot Rods and others.

They played at the Windsor Castle in Parnell and The Globe in Wakefield Street, before Zwines opened in March 1978.

The Castle is still there, but The Globe has since been demolished, a hundred years of tall tales and long drinks knocked aside for an apartment building.

I’d taken street photos of the Scavengers, and photos of them playing live. But by the time they played The Globe I was less interested in taking photos of the bands, and more interested in the audience that came to see them. By that time the band had no problem letting me join them on stage, my camera focused on people in the crowd.

Funny thing, many of the regulars in the audience would soon be in bands themselves.

Somewhere along the way I decided the exhibition would be called “The Fan Club”.

I’d been shooting black and white, Kodak Tri-X and Ilford HP5 push-processed two stops to make the most of the little available light.

Just before The Globe gigs, I bought a flash, using it some nights but not others.

The camera flash caught what even the eye could not see in the dim light. With greater depth of field, everyone was in focus, stopped in mid-action.

And while it would be at least another year or so before I finally got to see George Romero’s 1968 zombie flick “Night of the Living Dead”, when I did, well, some scenes looked, eerily familiar…
